Non-cash giving to Alongside Families

Did you know you can potentially reduce your taxes while giving more to the charities that you care about? Learn more through the video below!

Alongside Families partners with the National Christian Foundation (NCF) to process non-cash gifts directly. When you direct your gift to our NCF Alongside Families Single Charity Fund, all profits from liquidation of the assets are directly deposited in our ministry's fund.

If you have questions, please reach out to us at emily@alongsidefamilies.org. We can connect you with our NCF representative to support you through the process!

What types of non-cash gifts can be given?

Marketable Securities: Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds

Giving appreciated stocks and mutual funds is a great way to maximize your giving because you receive an immediate income tax deduction for the full fair market value of securities you transfer that you’ve held for at least one year. In addition, you pay no capital gains tax on the difference between your cost and the fair market value. Consult with your financial and/or tax advisor to analyze your particular situation and confirm tax benefits.

How to Give Marketable Securities

  • Please email us at emily@alongsidefamilies.org to let us know that you will be making a gift of stocks, mutual funds, or bonds so that we can notify our NCF representative. This will help to ensure that the contribution goes directly to the Alongside Families Single Charity Fund as intended rather than to the NCF General Fund.
  • Download THIS FORM and read the directions on page 1. Fill out the Letter of Intent on Page 2. Alongside Families' single charity fund information is pre-filled on page 2.
  • Email the completed form to Chris Vaughn, Charlotte-area NCF Director of Giver Services: cvaughn@ncfgiving.com

Real Estate or Non-cash Assets

If you’d like to discuss a possible gift of real estate, a trust or retirement account, or another unique gift, please contact our Executive Director, Emily Kemmann, at emily@alongsidefamilies.org

She would love to hear more about the possible gift and connect you with our NCF contact who can answer your questions and walk you through the process.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

If you are over 70-1/2 years old, then you may distribute directly from your IRA to Alongside Families up to $100,000 and exclude the contributed amount from your gross income for tax purposes. This amount can be counted towards the IRA’s annual required minimum distribution. Consult with your financial and/or tax advisor to analyze your particular situation and confirm tax benefits.

Estate Planning

You may designate Alongside Families to receive all or a portion of your estate after your lifetime. This type of giving may be accomplished through:

  • Will or Trust: You can name Alongside Families in your will or trust as a beneficiary, and your estate may receive an income tax deduction for the value of your bequest. Consult with your estate planning attorney and your financial and/or tax advisor to analyze your particular situation and confirm benefits.
  • Retirement Accounts: You can name Alongside Families as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement plans. Any amounts remaining in your plan, free of income and estate tax, will transfer to Alongside Families. Consult with your financial and/or tax advisor to analyze your particular situation and confirm tax benefits.
  • Life Insurance: You can simply name Alongside Families as beneficiary of part or all of your life insurance policy. You can also choose to make Alongside Families the owner of a life insurance policy that is no longer needed. When Alongside Families is made owner, you may receive a tax deduction for the amount of premiums you continue paying each year. If the policy is whole life, you may receive an immediate tax deduction for the cash value amount. Consult with your financial and/or tax advisor to analyze your particular situation and confirm tax benefits.
